20180926 Hockey talk

I caught the 3rd. Was going to watch the replay, but, it's a preseason game. I just can't do it.
Some thoughts.
Davidson? Yikes.
3rd guy high? Is that a thing this year?
Can you hear DEE LEE AH? You will soon.
Defense
Boqvist brings some pace. It's a tough one. Do you go with both he and Henri? Keith, Seabrook, Manning, Rutta, Hard Core Henri, Boqvist, Davidson. Forsling and Murphy come back eventually. What to do........What to do?
The offense will be scoring goals, so that's good.

2008-2009 here we come.

20180919 Hockey talk

Well, that was interesting.

I wrote this recap on Sunday.  Let's wee how we did.

Ward is a good goalie.  I like it
The D looks shaky and young.
Henri can move, but the small ice......
I like Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook even though they didn't play
Toews is a man possesed by something even though he didn't play
Saad is too even though he didn't play
Kane is an offensive force and he offends me.  Even he didn't play.
Rutta.....eh HE DIDN'T PLAY!.
Kahones is not what we think he is
Sikura is.
#71 is a good player, but not NHL good good.

Edited 7:00 Tuesday - pre game

20180915/16 Hockey talk

So many questions

  1. Will Schmaltz be able to handle C duties for a full season?
  2. Will Seabrook and Keith have a resurgence?
  3. Will Toews be his normal self (as opposed to his normal self)?
  4. Will Crawford be consistent or consistently inconsistent?
  5. Will he even play again?
  6. Defense - will there be any?
  7. Has Saad peaked a boo?
  8. Is Henri gonna play?

Answers to this and more on a special all day Saturday edition

 We are not doomed.

Fs has tended her resignation from posting duties. She might be around every now and then, especially if people decide to discuss hockey. Personally, I think I'm done with the OT posts, or at least save them for something interesting/unusual. We all know each other's specious political viewpoints and largely ad hominem arguments and it's pretty clear hashing them out here has done more driving away than enlightenment. Anyway, I wasn't looking forward to coming up with game threads, let alone daily threads, so we'll see what happens.

More popular covers week:

Originally recorded by JJ Cale in 1976. Recorded by Eric Clapton in 1977 for Slowhand, but the live version from Just One Night is what charted.

2018-05-18: I Fought the Law (The Clash, 1979)

More popular covers week:

Originally recorded by The Crickets (post Buddy Holly) in 1960 but didn't chart, then charted by the Bobby Fuller Four in 1966.

2018-05-17: The Tide Is High (Blondie, 1980)

More popular covers week:

Originally recorded by The Paragons in 1966.

2018-05-16: (I've) Got My Mind Set on You (George Harrison, 1987)

More popular covers week:

Originally recorded by James Ray in 1962.

2018-05-15: (There's) Always Something There to Remind Me (Naked Eyes, 1983)

More popular covers week:

Written in the 1960s by songwriting team Burt Bacharach and Hal David, "(There's) Always Something There to Remind Me" was first recorded as a demo by Dionne Warwick in 1963, then charted for Lou Johnson in 1964.

British synthpop duo Naked Eyes then took the song to #8 in the US with their 1983 version, which also had the honor of introducing most pop music enthusiasts to the emerging monolith of digital sampling technology. Other less obvious uses of the tech had been used in previous charting songs, such as "She Blinded Me With Science" by Thomas Dolby, but none were quite so obvious or distinct.

2018-05-14: Tainted Love (Soft Cell, 1981)

A couple weeks ago, we had neo's unexpected covers week, so this week it's covers that were more popular than the originals.

Originally recorded by Gloria Jones in 1964. Extended version includes "Where Did Our Love Go," originally recorded by the Supremes, also in 1964.
